Since 1991, the Royal Belgian Association for Conchology has organized an annual shell fair.
In the early years, the fair was held at the Damien Institute in Aarschot – partly because one of the organizers was active there as a teacher. Soon, the school's cafeteria became too small to accommodate the ever-growing number of sellers and visitors, and the event moved towards Antwerp.
A sports hall was found in Deurne at the Schijnpoort near the Sportpaleis. We held our monthly meetings there as well as our fairs. However, plans for the Oosterweel connection meant that after about ten years, we had to look for a new location again.
A new location was found in the “Extra Time” sports hall in Hoboken (see photo on the right from 2014 during the fair setup), which would again serve as the epicenter for both the monthly meetings and the fair for about ten years. Expansion of that region and plans to transform the sports hall into a seminar center meant that in 2017 we had to say goodbye to Extra Time and look for a new location again.
While the monthly meetings have since been held at the Cultural Center of Sint-Anneke Linkeroever, the fair has been organized since 2018 in the “Kattenbroek” sports hall in Edegem. (See photo on the left from the setup in 2018).
Although the location is somewhat "in the back," Kattenbroek offers the best facilities so far in terms of hall space, lighting, catering, child-friendliness, and cleanliness. We hope to organize our fair there for many more years!
